A very serious contribution from Anthony Brain with which I have very serious differences. Nonetheless it is a very detailed piece some of which I agree with completely, some of which I half agree with and more I totally reject. The notion, for instance, that Joseph Hansen said the last word on workers’ states and Anthony’s understanding of what now constitutes workers’ states and when and whether former workers’ states (degenerate or deformed) fell. A big deficit in understanding the Marxist Theory of the State, IMHO. But to repeat a very serious effort.
As Trotsky said in the period between the two world wars (1914-1939) class conflicts that are developing within the Imperialist countries in which the ruling class cannot attack the masses with the normal methods of Bourgeois Democracy. There was an article reprinted in the Guardian during 2011 by Trotsky where he draw an analogy between fuses going out when electricity is ovcr-heated the fuses went out and the class struggle severely weakening the stability of Bourgeois Democracy. Due to the balance of class forces the ruling classes could only bring fascism to power in Italy; Germany; and Spain. They could not in other Imperialist countries because the working class would not put up with it.
